Before and After Pictures of the Texas City Explosion

The first picture of the Grand Camp was taken approximately two minutes prior to the explosion which ocurred at 9:12 a.m., April 16, 1947. The second picture was taken after the devastating explosion. Two other ships, the Wilson B. Keen and the High Flyer, were heavily damaged. The High Flyer, also carrying a cargo of ammonium nitrate fertilizer, exploded at 01:10 a.m. the next day, killing one man and severely injuring 24 others. A total of more than 500 were killed, and more than 3,000 were injured. The bodies of many of those killed were never found.
